THE MIKE WALSH FELLOWSHIPS

Background
In 1996, Mike established The Mike Walsh Fellowships to assist talented young Australian theatre artists who have the potential to make a significant contribution to the Australian arts and entertainment industry. A Fellowship enables a recipient to travel abroad for a wider knowledge and experience of theatre, such as through a formal course of study, or by a self-devised program which, for example, might include a short course, private instruction, observation, secondment, meetings, or an association with a theatre company, etc, before returning to Australia to pursue his or her career.

At the time of establishment, Mike’s business interests were all in Sydney, and the Fellowships were offered exclusively to graduates of Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art; they were open to practitioners from any full-time NIDA course who had graduated in the previous ten years. The total value of the awards was $35 000 annually; in the first fifteen years of the awards, Mike had given more than $500 000 in these NIDA Fellowships.

Development

In the years following his acquisition of Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, Mike’s interests had spread to his home town. At the same time, many of the productions staged at the Maj had been musicals, and Mike had been impressed both by the number and by the quality of graduates in Music Theatre from the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts who had graced the productions. This led him to make changes to the Fellowships. Since 2011:

  • the Fellowships have been open to theatre practitioners who are recent graduates of the Victorian College of the Arts and of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts as well as of NIDA;
  • the period of eligibility has excluded very recent graduates who have not had time to establish themselves in the profession; and
  • the total amount distributed annually has been increased to $50,000.

By the end of 2017 some $800 000 had been given in Fellowships.

A further development
Mike now wishes to acknowledge the talent and achievement of those theatre professionals who have not studied at a tertiary institution, but have taken a non-tertiary course, or who have simply learnt on the job. From 2018 onward the Fellowships are thrown open to all young theatre practitioners, trained or untrained, but still subject to a time eligibility criterion (see below). At the same time Mike has increased the amount to be awarded to $60,000.

Eligibility for 2018 Fellowships

Training eligibility criterion
This is no longer a mandatory requirement. Mike now welcomes theatre practitioners in any field - not only performers (e.g., designers, producers, stage management) – whether trained in a tertiary vocational course, trained in other vocational course (e.g., acting, writing), or untrained. NB: All applicants, whether trained or not, apply on an even footing.

Time eligibility criterion
Now that the field has been widened, it is necessary to present this in two parts, for tertiary vocational graduates and for non-graduates; allowance is made for the non-graduate to learn on the job (for details see ‘For Intending 2018 Applicants’).

Scope of the Fellowships
Each applicant proposes how he or she would use a Fellowship, if awarded. In the past this has been virtually open, and limited only by cost. The only proposals to be considered for some years now, however, have been in the field of theatre, broadly considered.

Administration
The Fellowships will be administered by Terence Clarke AM, with the assistance of Di Edwards, Mike’s Personal Assistant. Mike Walsh AM OBE, will chair the interviewing panel, which in 2018 includes Sandra Bates AM, former longtime Artistic Director of Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre; Lisa McCune, award-winning actor; Kip Williams, Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company; Mark Rowe, General Manager of Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne; and Mr Clarke.

Applications
The Mike Walsh Fellowships are awarded by interview; not all Fellowships and Scholarships are. Mr Walsh chairs the interviewing panel. As he is resident mainly in London, the date is usually not determined until each new financial year; and because it is important that each year the Application Form give the date of interview, the website does not post the current Application Form and associated material much before August. The previous year’s Form and material may, however, be regarded as a good indication of what to expect. Intending applicants should download and read the next article, ‘For Intending Applicants’, and then download the Application Form that follows. Applications should not be submitted until a fortnight or so before the closing date.

Closing date
Applications close Friday 5:00 pm, 2nd November 2018
